Immigrants are defined as those individuals who depart their country of origin voluntary in search of better economic and living arrangements.
Undocumented immigrants (more commonly referred to as “illegal aliens”) are those individuals who enter this country without proper (legal) documentation, and have done so for reasons similar to those who are in this country as immigrants.
The term illegal alien is insidious and places the undocumented into a criminal category, and unjustifiably so.
Three different categories of immigrants depending on their primary motive for entering this country and their socioeconomic characteristics:
1. Labor migrants: This category usually symbolizes what the average person thinks about when the word immigrant is mentioned. These individuals can be in the United States without proper documentation or as contract laborers.
2. Professional immigrants: These individuals have favored status in the United States because of their education backgrounds and employment competencies.
3. Entrepreneurial immigrants: These immigrants entered the United States with proper documentation and have managed to develop businesses that very often serve their own communities.
